Terms of Service

Last updated: May 2026

Provider

These Terms are entered into with the operator of RemoteX, doing business as neurocontrarian, located in Québec, Canada. Payments are processed by LemonSqueezy, acting as Merchant of Record — they handle VAT, sales tax, invoicing and chargeback management on behalf of the author.

1. Acceptance

By downloading, installing, or using RemoteX ("the Software"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Software. When you first launch the Software you are asked to confirm your acceptance, and for Pro purchases acceptance is also confirmed at checkout.

2. License

Free tier. The open-source core of RemoteX is free software licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (AGPLv3). The source code is available at github.com/neurocontrarian/remotex. You may use, study, modify, and distribute it under the terms of the AGPLv3; if you distribute a modified version, or run a modified version as a network service, you must make your modifications available under the AGPLv3.

Trademarks. No license granted here, including the AGPLv3, grants any right to the RemoteX name, logo, or other trademarks or branding of the author, which are reserved. You may not use them in a way that implies endorsement or affiliation without permission.

Pro features. The Pro module (remotex_core/pro/) is proprietary software. Purchasing a Pro license grants you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive right to use the Pro features on up to 3 devices simultaneously that you own or control.

3. Restrictions

You may not:

  • Share, sell, or transfer your Pro license key to another person
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or bypass the Pro license validation
  • Use the Pro features on more than 3 devices at the same time

4. License keys

License keys are tied to the email address used at purchase. Each activation consumes one slot (maximum 3). If you reinstall your OS without deactivating first, contact support to free the orphaned slot.

5. Updates and license expiry

Pro license holders receive all future updates to the Software at no extra cost for the duration of their license. Yearly license holders must renew to continue receiving updates after expiry.

Yearly license expiry. If a yearly license is not renewed, Pro features are automatically deactivated at the end of the subscription period (with a 3-day grace period). The Software reverts to the free tier: SSH machine management, unlimited custom buttons, and other Pro-only features are no longer accessible. Custom buttons you created beyond the free-tier limit (3) are hidden but not deleted — they are fully restored if you renew your license. Your configuration data is never deleted due to a lapsed subscription.

Renewal. Renewing your yearly license restores all Pro features automatically within 24 hours, without any manual action required.

6. Disclaimer of warranties

The Software is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. Use it at your own risk. The author is not liable for any damage caused by the use or inability to use the Software.

7. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the author be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, punitive, or consequential damages arising from or related to the use of, or inability to use, the Software — including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, business interruption, or damage to remote systems caused by user-issued commands — even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

The author's total aggregate liability for any direct damages, regardless of the cause of action (contract, tort, strict liability, or otherwise), shall not exceed the amount paid by you for the Software during the twelve (12) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim. For users of the free tier who have not paid for the Software, the Software is provided "AS IS" under the GNU AGPLv3 with no warranty of any kind, and the author shall have no liability whatsoever.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitations of liability for consequential or incidental damages. In such jurisdictions, liability is limited to the smallest amount permitted by applicable law.

8. Your responsibilities

RemoteX is a launcher: it executes the commands you create, exactly as you write them, locally or over SSH. It does not validate, sandbox, review, or restrict those commands.

You are solely responsible for:

  • The commands you create, run, schedule, or allow an AI assistant to run via the MCP integration, and for all of their consequences — including data loss, system damage, downtime, or effects on remote or third-party systems.
  • Maintaining your own backups of any important data.
  • Ensuring you are authorized to run commands on, and connect to, any machine you target.

Do not run commands you do not understand.

9. Indemnification

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the author from and against any claims, demands, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to: your use or misuse of the Software; the commands you run through it; your violation of these Terms; or your infringement of any law or third-party right.

10. Acceptable use and high-risk activities

You may not use the Software for any unlawful purpose, to access systems you are not authorized to access, or in any manner that violates applicable law.

The Software is general-purpose desktop software. It is not designed or intended for use in high-risk or safety-critical environments — including life support, medical devices, nuclear facilities, aircraft or air-traffic systems, or any environment where failure could lead to death, personal injury, or severe physical or environmental damage. You assume all risk arising from any such use.

11. Eligibility

You must be of the age of majority in your jurisdiction and able to form a legally binding contract to use the Software or purchase a Pro license.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the province of Québec, Canada, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. The parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Québec, Canada, to the extent permitted by applicable mandatory consumer-protection law.

13. Entire agreement; severability

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and Refund Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and the author regarding the Software and supersede any prior understanding. If any provision is held invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full force and effect, and the unenforceable provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted by law. The author's failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of that right or provision.

14. Changes to these Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time, at our sole discretion. Changes become effective immediately upon posting to this page. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Your continued use of the Software after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. We encourage you to review these Terms periodically.
